Studying problem is one of the complaints of both parents and teachers. From the perspective of adults, despite all the opportunities and opportunities, they offer for children, they do not study. although teachers, parents do their best they began to get extremely anxious and angry when they do not get the result they want. As they will be unable to control their emotions, children’s studying problem is getting more complicated.

Not studying is not an offense, it’s the choice of the brain! Not being able to study is the common problem among the children. Why do children not study despite all of these opportunities?

Not studying is not a simple problem as thought. Some common reasons can be mentioned in addition to the different problems underlying it. This problem is not only specific to our children, anyone who became student experienced it. In fact, studying is not a thing that people do with joy. Because we do not determine the topics in the school and they are determined by people we don’t know. Naturally, this does not seem very exciting to anyone. We can even say that it is more normal for children to not want to study rather than study.

The reward of the studying is received after a very long period when the student begins to university or have a job. The biggest threat to these awards is the PC, TV, theatre, and social events they carry out with their friends. A child should give up from the current pleasure and be ready to get bored in order to study. At this point, this is a case which does not comply with our brains. Because our brains love to tend events which will provide pleasure in a short time. The section of our brain which controls the pleasure is one of the sections which complete its formation later (around 20s). Therefore, it is not a fault for children to not want to study but it’s the choice of our brains.

Adopt the following methods while helping your children to study.

Ensuring your child to study is a process which should be managed well. Although there are different applications according to the age, in general, it is possible to talk about a model which is applied to these children and is successful. This method is effective in children who did not get the studying habit…

1. Breaking the Psychological Resistance

At this stage talk with your child and ask him how much he can study in a day. Let’s assume that he told you half an hour. Give him 15 minutes as the half of this period. Tell your child that, “you told me half an hour, however, I don’t want you to study for half an hour, I only want you to study for 15 minutes.”

An explanation such as “because you have to get the habit of studying” will help your child to get the logic of the beginning of the application.

2. Create a Routine

The goal in the second stage is to ensure that your child will study 15 minutes every day. To do this, tell him, “We have some rules about the period we have determined. The first rule is we will repeat this 15 minutes period every day. We will not accumulate all of these periods and study at the weekend”.

3. Set up

At this stage, you need to set a studying environment for children. Tell your child that, “Our second rule is studying will not take place in front of the TV, on the bed or on the floor. We have to complete the period we have determined in our study room and desk. Because we want you to get in the habit of studying well by studying in the same setting every day.”

4. Ensure Autocontrol

Don’t let your child study less than what you have determined. At this stage tell your child that, “I don’t want you to study less than what we have determined. This is because we want to strengthen your auto control in terms of getting the habit of studying. Thus, you will have a discipline and you will strengthen your habit.” It is possible for you to ask your child to have a clock on his desk and control the period with this clock.

5. Increase Motivation

At the fifth and last stage, it is very important to act to improve your child’s motivation. Tell your child that he can exceed the period you have determined together. In other words, let your child make a preference to study more by giving him a message with the meaning of “if you want you can study more than 15 minutes”. Especially at this stage most of the children study more than the determined time. Thus, children have the proud of exceeding the period they thought and determined and they have faith in themselves about they were successful or be successful. This feeling is the breaking point in terms of them. You should not forget that each failure will create a basis for the next failure while each success will create a basis for the next success.

A child should be determined rather than ambitious. Ambitious children focus on their friends, not the tasks. They will compete all the time and try to do better than their friends. Therefore, you should not promote the ambition in children. However extreme inner motivation can show itself as ambition. Ambition is a feature which should not be promoted. Because the important thing is not ambition but determination. Determined children are task-oriented and they undertake their tasks with responsibility and do them happily. However ambitious children are relation-oriented. In other words, they will try to do better than their friends rather than completing the tasks they have.

You Should Take Precaution According to the Motivation Type

One of the biggest drawbacks in studying is motivation type. There are two motivation types in people as inner and external motivation and they are innate characteristics of people.

Children with high inner motivation

  1. They usually want to know their goals
  2. They love to study with a plan
  3. They are patient

Children with high external motivation

  1. They need to be guided all the time
  2. They focus on result and want to complete the task as soon as possible
  3. Those who can’t complete in a short time will get bored quickly and lose energy
  4. They often quit the task and make excuses
  5. Their most prominent feature is postponing. They postpone their responsibilities.

Instead of constantly blaming and criticizing the child you need to understand the type of motivation and take appropriate measures: Children with external motivation type should be guided to reveal their inner motivation. The most critical point here is the feeling of they will be successful should keep high all the time.

To gain basic habits and new behaviors, they should be repeated approximately 21 days. Therefore, this application which will be done in order to help children to gain study habits should be continued for 2-3 weeks. Thus, it is possible to make the neurological activity in the child’s brain very clear and permanent. At the end of this period, talk with your child and include 5-10 more minutes to that period. The period should be increased gradually by repeating the actions.
